WELLINGTON:
Brendon McCullum is a devastating batsman whose only mission is to destroy bowling attacks; but on Sunday he slipped into another role, into the skin of a captain, to play a defiant, watchful knock.
It may not yet be enough to save New Zealand, let alone win the Test, but he knows he has led his team into a new territory.
"That is what the team required.
And as captain that is what you have got to try and achieve," he said, while talking about his successful approach to the challenge. "You are not always going to (succeed) but you have got to try and work your game to the situation.
"Just pleased to be able to get through to the end of the day and make sure we are only five down. We have got a lot more ground to cover on Monday, and being five down is key for us. If we had been six-seven down then this Test was over. That was a big couple of hours at the end there," he explained.
McCullum gave great credit to India for the way they bowled and stuck to the task. "It was hard work out there. I thought they bowled brilliantly. At five for 90, things were not looking so good but BJ and I put together a partnership which meant we are undefeated at the end of the day."
The New Zealand captain, who scored a double in the first Test, realises the mountain that awaits them on the fourth day. "To be honest, we probably need a double century to keep us in the game. If BJ and I can emulate what we did today, tomorrow night would be great to go out and make some decisions about where the game is heading, rather than constantly try and fight out of it in this situation," he said.
NZ's assistant coach Bob Carter believes that they still have a long way to go. "I would like to bat for another two sessions or more. Effectively we have now got that little lead. We need to build partnerships. If we can get a few more out of this one, it will be fantastic. We know that India will come hard at us tomorrow. It will be another battle and hopefully we can reach that again.
"This is one of the few times where we have had to come from behind. We have sort of been leading most of the summer. This was a real test of us today and tomorrow is the same — test of our batting to see whether we can put a score on the board in order to put India under pressure. They are a fine team, they are going to come out and bowl well again. We know we have got a challenge on our hands, and it is something we are really looking forward to."
